A Monster Calls

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

At 12:07  Conor woke up from the same nightmare he had been having for the last few months to a monster standing by his window.  Huge and ugly, but definitely real, the monster says Conor has called the monster to help Conor. Reluctantly at first, Conner  accepts his help, and the monster tells him three stories. The monster only requires Conor to tell his story when the monster  had finished telling its own. This is a wonderful book about accepting life’s circumstances and moving on.

Wow! This story was a strange mix of scary, sad and evokes emotions Ness so wonderfully puts into words. There are so many life lessons hidden in this book – you could read it a hundred times and still find something valuable. It was different from other book I’ve read because of the unique and powerful storyline and everyone should read it. In fact, once my mom read it, she made it assigned reading for both my younger brothers!

This book was also made into a movie last month – has anyone seen it? Is it any good?

  1. I’ve had a couple of students see the movie. It was too sad (as a book) for me to want to go.
